The Wild Cherry, Prunus avium

Description


The Wild Cherry is a deciduous tree growing to up to 30m tall. Young trees tend to have a straight trunk, and a symmetrical, conical crown, becoming more rounded or irregular on older trees. Wild Cherry has green, oval and toothed leaves and during early spring, produces beautiful displays of white, five-petalled flowers on it's branches. It is common all over the UK and can be found almost anywhere, town or country. Wild Cherries are just like supermarket ones, tasty and sweet, but free!

Leaves

☘️ Green, ovate and toothed. The leaves turn orange, pink or red before falling in Autumn.

Flowers

🌷 Beautiful displays of white five-petalled flowers with golden yellow stamens. Flowering in Early Spring. Other cherry species may produce pink or purple blossoms.

Bark

πŸͺ“ Wild Cherry bark is smooth and purplish-brown, with prominent horizontal grey-brown raised pores running along the trunk when young. In older trees, the bark becomes thick, fissured and dark blackish-brown.

Fruit / Seeds

🍏 Cherries form on the tree in late summer. Cherries are usually shiny and red, but black and yellow varieties can sometimes be found.

πŸ‘€ Wild Cherry is relatively easy to identify, especially when in flower, or in fruit. The beautiful cherry blossom flowers and leter the hanging red cherries are the key identifiers of this tree.
